About us

On 1 November 1946 R J Hewett (Newbury) Ltd was born.

Ronald Hewett had been invalided out of the Second World War and having been offered a desk job back in the police force, decided to resort to his original trade as an electrician. He started the business at 61 Cheap Street and whilst he worked on the electrical contracting side, his sister Freda ran the shop selling electrical goods.

Over the years he diversified into TV rentals and vacuum cleaner chimney sweeping, whilst keeping the shop open and the electrical contracting side going.

His first electrical job was at Wasing Place for Sir William Mount. Whilst working there Sir William gave a party in a marquee erected by Peter Carter of Carters Reading and Ron was invited to do the lighting and electrics. This turned out to be the first of many marquee installations and the beginning of a lifetime friendship and business association.

Today the outside events contracting side of the business is one of the largest in the UK, fulfilling contracts such as the Ryder Cup over the past 20 years including the last European event held in Wales at Celtic Manor, Henley Regatta, PGA events including the British and Scottish Open Golf Tournaments, and The Aegon Championships at the Queen’s Club, London to name but a few.

Local connections have continued with a long association with The Newbury and District Agricultural Society. All the electrical distribution requirements are fulfilled by the company for the Newbury Show – now known as The Royal County of Berkshire show.

The Lighting Centre has been family owned throughout its history. Ronald’s daughter Anne took up the reins as Company Secretary and following Ron’s retirement, the company continued to be successful under the watchful eye of her husband, Ian Bennett, the previous Managing Director,  who was responsible for building one of the largest lighting specialists in the country.

Subsequent to Ian’s retirement, his daughter Kate  has continued with all of these traditions and values, and now heads one of the UK’s leading event power distribution and lighting companies, alongside her husband David Mayo, who has himself, over 30 years industry experience.

All this has enabled the birth of Halogenex!
